TWO police officers were killed on Thursday morning in Anambra State when gunmen employed an Improvised Explosive Device, IED, to attack the law officers.
The incident occurred in Uruagu, a community within Nnewi North Local Government Area, as the officers were reportedly engaged in a gun battle with the assailants.
According to reports, the police operatives were on duty when they encountered a group of armed men. During the ensuing exchange of gunfire, the attackers hurled an IED at the police team, resulting in a devastating explosion that killed two officers instantly.
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as the explosion reverberated through the area, drawing attention from nearby residents and prompting a swift response from other security personnel.
The deceased officers were part of the Anambra State Police Command, which has been actively engaged in efforts to combat rising violence attributed to various militant groups operating in the region. This particular attack highlights not only the dangers faced by law enforcement but also the increasing sophistication of tactics used by these criminal elements.

The command has urged members of the public to provide any information that could assist in locating the assailants. “We appeal to the public, particularly those who witnessed the incident, to support the police by providing information that could help in tracking down the criminals. The Inspector General of Police has also been briefed on the situation and is expected to reinforce security measures in Anambra and surrounding areas. This incident comes amid heightened tensions and sporadic violence linked to separatist movements and organized crime in southeastern Nigeria.
The use of IEDs by militants has become increasingly common in Nigeria, particularly in regions grappling with insurgency and violent crime. Security analysts have expressed concern over this trend, noting that it poses significant challenges for law enforcement agencies that are already stretched thin due to ongoing conflicts and resource limitations.
Local communities have been affected deeply by such violence, leading to calls for increased security presence and community engagement initiatives aimed at preventing future attacks. Residents are particularly anxious about their safety as incidents like this one contribute to a growing climate of fear and instability.
