The 81 Division of the Nigerian Army has launched an investigation into the death of a police officer, Saka Ganiyu, who was reportedly killed during a confrontation with a soldier in Lagos on October 9.
The incident occurred while Ganiyu and his team were enforcing traffic laws when an unregistered T4 Volkswagen commercial bus was spotted driving against traffic. The driver of the bus, who claimed to be a soldier, called for backup from his colleagues stationed at Ojo Army Barracks. Armed with dangerous weapons, the soldiers attacked the police team.
During the assault, the police task force called for reinforcement, and additional officers were deployed to the scene to repel the attack. However, Inspector Ganiyu sustained severe injuries and was rushed to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital for medical treatment. Sadly, the officer later died in the hospital while receiving treatment for his injuries.

“The incident, currently under investigation, led to the unfortunate death of the policeman,” the statement noted. “The soldier suspected of committing the offence has been taken into custody and is being investigated by the Military Police.”
Ayeni emphasized that the incident is a serious violation of the Nigerian Army’s Code of Conduct and Rules of Engagement, and stressed that the Army has continually educated its personnel to avoid actions that could damage its reputation or harm relations with other security agencies and the public.
