The Federal Government has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative to invest $2 billion in a vast fiber optic project that aims to extend the country’s cable capacity from 35,000 kilometers to a staggering 125,000 kilometers.
This ambitious plan was announced by Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, during a recent visit to the vandalized Digital Innovation Park in Kano. Tijani highlighted that this project is crucial for enhancing the terrestrial fiber optic backbone across Nigeria. It promises to deliver meaningful connectivity to underserved communities, empowering schools, hospitals, government facilities, and businesses to thrive in a digitally interconnected environment.
“This investment will not only accelerate growth in vital sectors like education, health, and agriculture but also deepen Nigeria’s digital infrastructure,” Tijani stated. He emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering partnerships, particularly with the Kano State Government, to streamline investments from private infrastructure companies, positioning Kano as a burgeoning digital hub.

In today’s digital age, Tijani noted, technology serves as a cornerstone for boosting productivity and diversifying Nigeria’s economy. He pointed out that while many nations grapple with declining populations, Nigeria, with its dynamic youth workforce, stands ready to become a leading exporter of tech talent.
The Minister also introduced the Three Million Technical Talent program, an initiative aimed at equipping three million Nigerians with essential digital and technical skills to combat the shortage of professionals in fields such as software development, data science, and cybersecurity. With over 300 participants from Kano, this program underscores Nigeria’s potential to contribute significantly to the global digital workforce.
Regarding the vandalized Digital Innovation Park, Tijani announced that IHS Towers would support its restoration, reflecting a commitment to rebuilding a facility that symbolizes Nigeria’s ambition to excel in the global digital economy.
