A CNG-powered vehicle exploded at the NIPCO filling station in Aduwawa, Benin City, Edo State, on Wednesday leaving three people with severe injuries, including a motorist with serious in his eye.

An anonymous station attendant disclosed that two other victims—a woman whose stomach was severely injured and another person who lost a foot—are receiving urgent care at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH, Ugbowo.

The blast was linked to a modified cylinder fabricated by a welder without proper authorization. The welder has since turned himself in to the police. “The explosion occurred while vehicles were waiting to refill. A vehicle being serviced suddenly exploded,” the source said. Footage circulating on social media shows the aftermath of the blast, with debris scattered across the station and nearby vehicles visibly damaged. The explosion reportedly caused severe injuries to a motorist, a pump attendant and another individual present at the scene. The UBTH Public Relations Officer, Joshua Uwaila, confirmed that one of the injured individuals is in stable condition.

The Presidential CNG Initiative, PCNGI, in a statement on Twitter, acknowledged the incident and extended sympathy to the victims. It also emphasized that the explosion was caused by an illegally modified cylinder, violating CNG safety standards.

Authorities are investigating the incident, with regulatory bodies reiterating the importance of adhering to safety regulations for CNG use. The PCNGI also highlighted the need for the upcoming Nigeria Gas Vehicle Monitoring System, a collaboration between SON, NMDPRA, NADDC, and FRSC, to prevent further incidents.

This incident comes amid a broader push by the Nigerian government to promote CNG as a safer and more economical alternative to traditional fuels following the removal of fuel subsidies in 2023. However, safety concerns have been mounting regarding improper conversions and maintenance practices. Experts have warned that while CNG can be a safe option when handled correctly, improper installations can lead to catastrophic failures.

As investigations continue, local authorities are urging vehicle owners to prioritize safety by ensuring their vehicles are converted at accredited centers only. The situation remains critical as those injured receive medical attention at nearby hospitals, with hopes for their recovery amid ongoing investigations into this alarming incident.
