Genaro Garcia Luna, Mexico’s former public security chief, has been sentenced to over 38 years in a U.S. Federal Court for his involvement in protecting the Sinaloa cartel, one of the most notorious drug trafficking organizations.
The verdict, delivered in New York, also includes a $2 million fine. Garcia Luna, once celebrated as Mexico’s “drug czar” and an ally in the U.S. war on drugs, was convicted on five charges, including engaging in a criminal enterprise and conspiracy to distribute cocaine.
The former top official used his position from 2006 to 2012 to shield cartel activities, allowing the Sinaloa cartel to traffic more than a million kilograms of narcotics across borders, contributing to violence and deaths in both the U.S. and Mexico.
U.S. prosecutors disclosed Garcia Luna’s deep ties to the cartel, alleging that in exchange for millions of dollars in bribes, he shared intelligence about police raids, protected cartel members, and ensured drug shipments passed undetected. The trial included testimony from former cartel members and Mexican officials, some of whom detailed the lavish lifestyle Garcia Luna funded through bribes, including a private zoo with exotic animals.

Despite his defense team’s claims that the case was based on lies from criminals seeking reduced sentences, Garcia Luna’s sentencing marks a significant moment in the fight against corruption and cartel influence in Mexico. Prosecutors had sought a life sentence, citing the immense damage caused by his betrayal of public trust.
The case has sparked political controversy in Mexico, with former President Felipe Calderon distancing himself from the allegations, while President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador called for an investigation into U.S. officials who worked closely with Garcia Luna during his tenure.
Garcia Luna’s conviction has not only ended his career but has further exposed the deep-rooted corruption within Mexico’s war on drugs, a battle that continues to ravage the country and its people.
