The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board JAMB, has announced that candidates who will reach the age of 16 by August 31, 2025, will be considered for admission to universities.
In a modification to the minimum age criteria for admission for the 2024/2025 academic year the exam body said while in the past, students were required to be a minimum of 18 years old to qualify for admission, candidates who will reach the age of 16 by August 31, 2025, can now be considered for admission, provided they meet the standards set by the institutions.
In a statement from Abuja on Thursday, JAMB’s spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin explained hat while upholding academic standards and honoring the policies of each institution, JAMB will now permit schools to admit candidates who will turn 16 by the designated date.
This change opens doors for those who may have previously been excluded from admission solely based on their age.
“The Board has now chosen to empower any willing institution to admit candidates who will turn 16 by August 31, 2025, without compromising standards or violating the specific admission policies of each institution.
“This decision allows those candidates, who may have previously been overlooked solely due to their age, to qualify for admission as long as they meet the institution’s established criteria”, Benjamin clarified.
Institutions can still uphold a minimum age of 16, even as JAMB requests lists of eligible candidates turning 16 between January 1 and August 31, 2025, within one week for a final decision. This adjustment aims to create equal opportunities for all candidates, ensuring fairness and preventing any unfair advantage.
