The Federal Executive Council has described the former Head of State, Gen. Dr. Yakubu Gowon (rtd) as an untrammeled icon of unity as the political icon marks 90th birthday anniversary.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume who echoed this through a Saturday statement said Dr. Gowon is a champion for national integration and peaceful coexistance in the country as exemplified by the formation of National Youth Service Corps during his administration.
This, according to him was done in order to give sense of oneness to all Nigerians irrespective of ethnic and religious divides.

“As a trailblazing statesman, his unflinching quest for unity transcends the frontiers of the nation as he co-founded the Economic Community of West African States in order to bring unity and promote economic cooperation among member states in the African sub-region,” the statement read.
The statement quoted the SGF as commending the former head of state for always praying for the unity and prosperity of the nation through his non-denominational prayer group.
“Nigeria Prays, and wish him robust health and sound mind as the nation keeps tapping from his wealth of wisdom,” the statement added.
