The Defence Headquarters has dismissed reports claiming that a senior officer was appointed as Acting Chief of Army Staff, COAS, amid rumors surrounding the health of Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the incumbent COAS.
Lagbaja, who has been on leave since September, sparked speculation after unverified reports of his death circulated over the weekend, which were promptly refuted by Army authorities.
Further complicating matters, another report falsely alleged that the Defence Headquarters had named an acting COAS in Lagbaja’s absence. In a statement issued on Monday, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Director of Defence Information, debunked this claim, stating that there is no provision for an acting COAS in the Nigerian Armed Forces.
“The Chief of Policy and Plans, Major General Abdulsalam Ibrahim, has been providing routine briefs to the COAS under the Standard Operating Procedures, and there is no vacuum in the Army leadership,” Gusau clarified.

He also confirmed that the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, had spoken with Lt. Gen. Lagbaja, confirming that the COAS is in good health and will return to duty upon completing his leave.
The Defence Headquarters also criticized those spreading false information and warned against further rumors, urging media outlets to verify reports with appropriate authorities before publishing.
Gusau further addressed calls for a military takeover of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, which had been voiced in a viral video. He condemned these calls, labeling them treasonous, and reaffirmed the military’s loyalty to the civilian government. Gusau emphasized that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remain committed to democracy and the constitutional order, while warning that any individuals or groups advocating unconstitutional changes will face consequences.
“The military is dedicated to safeguarding the nation’s integrity, and the peace enjoyed today is a direct result of the support from President Tinubu and the dedication of AFN leadership,” Gusau stated.
