Gunfire erupted in the Ifite Awka area of Anambra State on Thursday morning, leading to the deaths of at least four individuals in what is suspected to be a rivalry between cult groups.

Eyewitnesses reported that armed assailants stormed the vicinity around 9:30 AM, targeting individuals believed to belong to a rival faction near the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, UNIZIK, gate.

Residents described a scene of chaos as the gunmen opened fire indiscriminately, resulting in panic among locals. Police Public Relations Officer Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed that officers quickly responded to the incident, securing the area and transporting the injured to the hospital for treatment.

“Recall that the Command in the past has arrested some persons involved in such acts of making videos and voice notes to cause tension, and panic to distract the peace of Ndi Anambra.

“Given the above, Police and Other Security Forces have intensified patrols, and improved security dominance and surveillance to enforce the law, maintain Public Order, Public Safety and other Support Services in the State,” the police statement said.

Preliminary investigations disclosed that the attackers were specifically searching for rival cult members. Officers recovered several empty bullet casings from the scene, and investigations are ongoing in the area and further details would be communicated to the public in case of any new development.

Witnesses described a scene reminiscent of a war zone. One lecturer who witnessed the aftermath stated, “I saw seven persons lying dead. I had to turn back and go home”. This sentiment reflects the fear and panic that gripped the area as students and residents fled from the sound of gunfire.

The incident has raised significant concerns regarding safety in and around UNIZIK, particularly given the university’s ongoing battle against cultism—a pervasive issue affecting many Nigerian campuses. The university’s security department has previously emphasized its commitment to combating such violence, which often leads to tragic outcomes for students and staff alike .

In addition to this incident, the Anambra State Police Command is examining social media posts threatening violence in the region, emphasizing its commitment to maintaining public safety and protecting citizens’ rights.

This shooting highlights not only the dangers posed by cult activities in Nigerian universities but also underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures to protect students and staff from such violent outbreaks.
