The Sokoto State House of Assembly has endorsed Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s initiative to maintain a subsidised food supply for state residents.
The approval, which includes a commendation for the governor, was proposed by Alhaji Abubakar Shehu (APC-Yabo) and supported by Shehu Aliyu (APC-Wurno) in Thursday’s plenary. Shehu said that the motion was driven by the governor’s efforts to mitigate the suffering of the people in the state.
“We are all aware that our nation is currently grappling with economic challenges, making it difficult for ordinary citizens to meet their daily needs. The rising cost of living has left many vulnerable members of society struggling to put food on the table. The initiative is part of the state government’s commitment aimed at alleviating the current economic hardship in the state. The governor has assured that the program will be sustained as a revolving fund scheme, meaning the initiative will continue until further notice,” Shehu said.

Governor Aliyu recently launched the program, distributing food at discounted rates to ease economic challenges faced by citizens.
Under the initiative, 50kg bags of rice are priced at N38,700, down from N65,000, while 25kg bags are N19,500, and 10kg bags are N7,740. The program has already distributed 600 bags to each ward across Sokoto’s 23 LGAs, supporting stability in local food prices.
The Assembly also approved a motion for livestock water pool rehabilitation in Goronyo LGA, with Alhaji Nasiru Adamu (PDP-Goronyo) and seconded by Alhaji Abdullahi Zakari (APC-Rabah) highlighting the pools’ impact on local socio-economic activities.
“This is in line with the present administration’s efforts to improve the living standards of its people,” Adamu said.
