The UK Government has strengthened its commitment to Nigeria’s fight against terrorism by donating advanced counter-Improvised Explosive Device, IED, equipment to Operation Hadin Kai, OPHK, in Maiduguri.

The British Defence Staff West Africa presented the equipment to Maj.-Gen. Waidi Shuaibu, Theatre Commander of OPHK, marking a significant step in the collaboration between the UK and Nigeria to counter insurgency threats in the region.

The UK’s Defence Attaché to Nigeria, Col. Matt Lynch, emphasized that the non-lethal, highly technical equipment was specifically chosen to aid Nigerian forces in identifying, neutralizing, and preventing IED threats. This strategic support includes specialized detectors and tools for standoff detection, designed to enhance the Nigerian military’s precision and safety in dealing with explosive threats.

“Our training team is actively working with the Nigerian Joint Task Force Northeast, providing skill development crucial for countering violent extremism,” Lynch said, highlighting that this collaboration extends beyond equipment to essential training for Nigerian Explosive Ordnance Disposal, EOD, teams.

Brig.-Gen. Abdulrazak Kazeem of the 47 Engineer Brigade hailed the donation as “timely,” noting it would significantly advance Nigeria’s operational and training capabilities. The tools will aid the military in detecting and addressing bomb-making locations, intercepting threats before they reach communities or military targets. “Our goal is to minimize casualties and prevent IEDs from impacting our forces and the public,” Kazeem stated, underscoring the equipment’s role in proactive threat detection and response.

Maj.-Gen. Waidi expressed gratitude for the UK’s continued support, which includes mentoring and the recent formation of a Counter-IED Coordination Cell within the 47 Engineer Brigade. He praised the British Defence Section’s ongoing mentorship program for EOD operators, acknowledging the essential role it plays in bolstering Nigeria’s defense capabilities in the northeast.

This reinforcement of Nigeria’s counter-IED efforts, supported by the Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Christopher Musa and Service Chiefs, is a vital step towards stability and socioeconomic recovery in the region.
