The immortalization of the late Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu and freedom for Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB, took center stage in Enugu on Saturday as prominent Igbos gathered to pay tribute to the former President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

The event, titled “Enugu Day of Tributes,” marked the South-East leg of a national tribute in honor of the distinguished industrialist and newspaper publisher, who passed away in July at the age of 81.

During the service of songs and tributes, various speakers, including representatives from Umuada Igbo Nigeria and the Diaspora, echoed passionate appeals to the federal government for Kanu’s release from the custody of the Department of State Security DSS.

Many speakers emphasized that securing Kanu’s release was Iwuanyanwu’s final wish. They urged President Bola Tinubu to honor Iwuanyanwu’s legacy by granting this request while also advocating his immortalization for his nationalism, patriotism and statesmanship.

Kate Ezeofor, President-General and founder of Umuada Igbo Nigeria and Diaspora, stated, “May God bless President Bola Tinubu as you grant us the immortalization of Chief Dr. Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu and the release of Nnamdi Kanu from DSS custody.”

At his laying-in-state at the old Eastern Nigeria Government Lodge in Enugu, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State praised Iwuanyanwu as an Iroko and a unifying figure during times of conflict.

“He exhibited remarkable work ethics and left a lasting impression. He was a pioneer in media, sports, industry, engineering, and aviation, truly ahead of his time,” Mbah said.

Former Governor of Ebonyi State, Dr. Sam Egwu acknowledged Iwuanyanwu’s strong personality and accomplishments.

Chief Garry Igariwey, a former President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, also celebrated Iwuanyanwu’s deep commitment to the Igbo community, calling him a figure of true greatness.
