Unknown gunmen have struck at the University of Nigeria Nsukka, UNN, taking away Prof. Oguejiofo Ujam, the Dean of the School of General Studies.

The abduction occurred along the Ugwuogo-Nike-Opi-Nsukka Road. Details surrounding the incident remain unclear, but sources indicate that Ujam is a senior lecturer in the Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry.

Witnesses reported that Prof. Ujam was traveling when armed men ambushed his vehicle, forcibly taking him and several other individuals who were in the vicinity. The abduction has sparked outrage and fear among students and faculty members at UNN, who are now calling for urgent action from authorities to ensure their safety.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has expressed deep concern over this incident, urging government officials to intensify efforts to combat the rising tide of kidnappings and violence in Enugu State.

In response to the kidnapping, local police have launched a manhunt for the perpetrators. They are working closely with community leaders to gather intelligence that could lead to the safe recovery of Prof. Ujam and others who may have been taken. The police have also advised residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities in their neighborhoods.

In a related incident, an official from the Federal Road Safety Corps, Emeason Chima, was abducted on Saturday along the same route. Chima, who works at the RS4.211 Ugbokolo Unit, was taken while driving alone near Maduka University in the Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State. His abductors have reportedly demanded a ransom of N50 million for his release.

This incident is part of a troubling trend in Nigeria, where kidnappings for ransom have become increasingly common. In recent weeks, there have been multiple reports of similar abductions along major roads in Enugu State, raising alarms about the safety of travelers. The situation has prompted discussions about the need for improved security measures and greater collaboration between law enforcement agencies and local communities.
