The Coalition of Civil Society Organizations, CSOs, in Katsina State has raised alarms over the ongoing power outages plaguing several Northern states, emphasizing the severe impact on healthcare services and daily lives.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Chairman AbdulRahman Abdullahi highlighted the crisis, noting that access to electricity-driven healthcare has deteriorated, resulting in tragic fatalities. He stated: “Electricity is a lifeline, and its absence has led to numerous dire consequences.”

The coalition expressed deep concern about the recent national grid collapse, which has left millions suffering and caused widespread economic disruptions. “Many businesses reliant on a consistent power supply have shuttered, leading to economic setbacks and loss of livelihoods,” Abdullahi lamented, citing the eight-day outage’s escalating toll on communities.

Abdullahi criticized the lack of communication from authorities regarding the expected timeline for resolving the crisis, noting: “Those in power seem indifferent, insulated by their access to private generators and solar systems.” This inequality, he argued, intensifies the frustration felt by ordinary citizens bearing the brunt of the situation.

The coalition also expressed disappointment with the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, for failing to provide timely updates or detailed reports on repair progress. Abdullahi urged TCN to fulfill its responsibilities as a national institution and communicate effectively with affected regions.

“The silence and inaction from TCN are both unjustifiable and unacceptable,” he said. The coalition is calling for an immediate prioritization of this crisis by the relevant authorities, emphasizing that a coordinated and expedited response is vital to alleviate the suffering of affected communities.

Abdullahi urged TCN to take responsibility and commit to delivering daily progress updates until the situation is resolved. “In the interest of transparency and accountability, we demand a sustained response to mitigate the hardships caused by this ongoing power outage,” he concluded.
