The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has issued a public warning urging Nigerians to avoid the recalled 50ml Nivea Black & White Invisible Roll-on deodorant, which promises 48-hour protection.
This advisory aligns with a similar notice from the European Union’s Rapid Alert System for Dangerous Non-Food Products based in Brussels.
In its announcement on Thursday, NAFDAC identified the affected batch as 93529610. According to the agency, the deodorant contains 2-(4-tert-Butylbenzyl) propionaldehyde, commonly referred to as BMHCA, a banned substance in cosmetics known to cause significant health risks, including harm to reproductive health, fetal development, and severe skin reactions.
The presence of BMHCA in cosmetics is particularly concerning as it can adversely affect both users and unborn children. NAFDAC emphasized that this chemical is prohibited due to its hazardous nature, urging consumers to take the warning seriously.
