The Nigerian Air Force, NAF, is gearing up to enhance its operational capabilities with the acquisition of 50 new aircraft set to join its fleet between December 2024 and 2026.

Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, disclosed this during the 2024 NAF Research and Development Retreat held in Abuja, themed: “Exploring Indigenous Technology and Innovation Towards Driving NAF Transformation.”

Abubakar emphasized the importance of reducing reliance on foreign military equipment by fostering local capacity for aircraft manufacturing and spare parts maintenance through research and development, R&D. He noted that NAF has established itself as a leader in Aerospace R&D, with achievements that include the creation of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and the production of rocket launchers.

Highlighting ongoing projects, he mentioned the TSAIGUMI Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, which has advanced significantly in partnership with UAVision of Portugal. NAF is also collaborating with Zenith Prom from Serbia for technology transfer related to 57mm rocket production.

The Chief of Air Staff further detailed the recent elevation of the Air Force Research and Development Centre into an institute, aimed at bolstering the organization’s research capabilities and access to funding. In addition to hardware innovations, NAF is advancing its software systems with the implementation of the Digital Correspondence application, streamlining communications and archiving processes.

Another key project is the Nigerian Air Force Integrated Management System, developed with QuaterOne Consulting, which seeks to consolidate existing NAF software into a unified platform for improved decision-making and operational efficiency.

Abubakar expressed confidence that the retreat would foster discussions on innovative strategies to further NAF’s R&D initiatives, transitioning concepts from prototypes to operational realities. This aligns with his command philosophy that prioritizes cutting-edge technology, strategic partnerships, and continuous learning.

Aviation and transformation experts present at the retreat are expected to contribute insights that will drive the NAF’s ongoing transformation and maximize the benefits of its substantial R&D investments.
