Gunmen launched a deadly attack on an army checkpoint in Ekenobizi, a border area between Abia and Imo states, early on Wednesday, killing two soldiers.
The assault took place in Umuopara, Umuahia South Local Government Area, around 6:18 a.m., according to a military source who requested anonymity. The attackers reportedly arrived in a white Lexus vehicle, though their exact numbers remain unknown.
In a press release, Lieutenant Colonel Jonah Unuakhalu of the Joint Task Force South East Operation UDO KA confirmed the incident, attributing the attack to the Indigenous People of Biafra and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network.

“Troops of the Joint Task Force South East Operation UDO KA, deployed along the Umuahia – Owerri Road in Abia State, came under attack in the early hours of 13 November 2024. Our gallant troops repelled the assault, forcing the attackers to retreat in disarray with gunshot wounds,” said Unuakhalu. He noted that the attackers abandoned both a Sienna and a Lexus Jeep in their flight. Unfortunately, two soldiers lost their lives in the firefight.
The Joint Task Force has appealed to South East residents, especially those in Abia State, for credible information to assist in tracking down the fleeing attackers. The force assured the public of its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, adhering to global standards and rules of engagement in its operations.
