The West African Examination Council, WAEC, has black-listed 13 schools in Kogi due to different types of examination malpractice during the 2023/2024 exams.

This information was shared by the state’s Commissioner for Education, Mr. Wemi Jones at a meeting with the principals and supervisors involved in the malpractice identified by WAEC.

Additionally, the commissioner disclosed that 14 supervisors had been blacklisted for their involvement in different levels of malpractice during the 2023/2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination , WASSCE, in the state.

He stated that the government is committed to taking action against principals, teachers, and supervisors who engage in or assist with exam malpractices in the state. Jones underscored that examination malpractice is a criminal offense and will be dealt with under the law.

From now on, offenders will be prosecuted according to the Kogi State Education Law and Other Matters Connected Therewith, 2020. A committee, led by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, will be formed to investigate those implicated by WAEC.

The commissioner further warned that anyone found guilty would face legal action. “Kogi State has invested significantly in education, and we will no longer tolerate the actions of ‘bad eggs’ that undermine the progress we’ve made in the education sector,” Jones asserted.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Dr. Seidu Jibrin, also addressed the issue, urging the principals and supervisors to refrain from any form of examination malpractice. He emphasized that such behaviors not only undermine the state but also jeopardize the future of the students.

“I encourage you to reflect on your actions, as posterity will judge everyone based on their deeds.

“While some teachers are being recognized with awards, it would be inappropriate for you to be singled out for condemnation.

“It is regrettable that this is occurring at a time when Kogi State is heavily investing in education, and anyone found guilty will face severe consequences,” Jibrin stated.
