Electricity workers under the Nigerian Union of Electricity Employees, FCT Council, partially disrupted operations at the headquarters of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, AEDC, on Wednesday.

The industrial action impacted the resolution of customer complaints and the supply of electricity to some areas in the capital city.

It was gathered that the union had issued an ultimatum over unresolved welfare demands, which the AEDC management failed to address.

In response, the union directed its members to shut down all AEDC offices over the management’s inability to meet their demands.

The union’s notice read: “As we have reached the end of our ultimatum to the AEDC management regarding our unsettled demands, please ensure that all offices are locked down and secured until our demands are met.”

The strike action was taken due to the management’s failure to address the workers’ grievances, with the union adding that the protest would continue until a resolution was reached.

Staff members, who blocked the entrance to the headquarters, chanted solidarity songs and carried placards with messages such as, “No to casualisation of workers,”
“No to board interference,” and “We demand payment of 15 months’ salaries and pension.”

The AEDC’s Head of Marketing and Communications, Adefisayo Akinsaya, confirmed the industrial action.

She stated: “Yes, there was an industrial action, but it has been resolved, and everything is peaceful now.”

Similarly, the Chief Technical Officer of AEDC and the Chairman of the NUEE said the strike was called off earlier in the day after an agreement was reached with the AEDC management.
