An early morning fire Monday gutted the only market at Trademore Estate, Lugbe, Abuja, causing significant damage.
The blaze reportedly started around 3:30 a.m., shortly after the Abuja Electric Distribution Company restored power to the area. While the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, initial accounts suggest a possible link to the electricity restoration.
Firefighters from Dunamis Church were the first to respond, arriving at 5 a.m., followed shortly by teams from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and Sauka Station, who managed to contain the fire. As of now, the extent of the damage and items lost in the incident have not been disclosed.
Joe, a resident of Trademore Estate, described the early morning fire as “tense and chaotic,” recalling how he was alerted around 4 a.m. By the time he arrived, the blaze had already spread.

This tragic incident follows a history of disasters in the estate, including devastating floods. In June 2023, over 100 houses were submerged after heavy rains, with videos showing two individuals allegedly swept away by floodwaters.
The estate, located along the Lugbe-Airport Expressway in Abuja, has been grappling with recurring challenges, raising concerns among residents and authorities alike.
Further updates are expected as authorities investigate the cause and assess the losses.
