The Police Service Commission, PSC, has taken decisive action against senior officers, approving the dismissal of 18 and the demotion of 19 others over misconduct and other infractions.

The announcement was made by PSC’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Mr. Ikechukwu Ani, in Abuja on Friday.

At the commission’s first Plenary Meeting, 109 pending disciplinary cases and 23 appeals were reviewed, including 13 court judgments seeking compliance. The PSC’s chairman, Mr. Hashimu Argungu, presided over the meeting.

The dismissed officers included 10 Assistant Superintendents, six Deputy Superintendents, two Chief Superintendents, and one Superintendent. Additionally, 19 other senior officers, including one Assistant Commissioner of Police and 13 Assistant Superintendents, had their ranks reduced. The PSC also reprimanded two Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, one for refusing lawful orders and the other for negligence.

Several other officers were given severe reprimands or letters of warning for their actions. The commission emphasized that the dismissed officers would face prosecution by the Nigeria Police Force’s legal unit.

In addition to these actions, the PSC warned that officers involved in civil matters, such as land disputes or marital issues, would be held accountable. Argungu stressed that the police should focus on criminal matters and threats to life, allowing courts to handle civil disputes. The PSC is committed to swiftly addressing disciplinary matters to ensure that only deserving officers progress in their careers.
