The Nigerian Army on Monday conducted a historic ceremony at the Army Headquarters in Abuja, marking the official assumption of command by Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede as the 24th Chief of Army Staff, COAS.
The symbolic lowering and hoisting of the command flag was performed, signifying the beginning of a new chapter of leadership under Oluyede’s tenure.
Lt.-Gen. Oluyede’s appointment by President Bola Tinubu on October 30 followed the untimely passing of his predecessor, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja. His role was confirmed by the Senate and the House of Representatives, further solidifying his position as Nigeria’s top military officer.
The transition of leadership was marked by a unique ceremony, in line with the Armed Forces Act. On November 1, the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, handed Oluyede the insignia of office in an unusual but significant gesture of continuity and respect for military tradition.

Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede brings decades of military experience to his new role. Before his appointment, he served as the 56th Commander of the elite Infantry Corps of the Nigerian Army, headquartered in Jaji, Kaduna. Born 56 years ago, Oluyede began his military journey as a member of the 39th Regular Course at the Nigerian Defence Academy. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1992, with his effective date of commission traced back to 1987.
Rising through the ranks over the years, he attained the rank of Major General in September 2020, cementing his reputation as a seasoned and accomplished officer.
Notably, Oluyede and his late predecessor, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, were course mates at the NDA, sharing a bond forged through years of rigorous training and service.
