Social media platforms are buzzing with reactions following the arrest of an activist and nurse, Abiodun Olamide Thomas by the Nigeria Police Force.
The activist was reportedly arrested in Lagos on Friday following orders of the Force Police Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, for criticising the excesses of the operatives on social media.
It was reported that Olamide, also known as Horlarmidey Africano raised the alarm about her safety, alleging that ACP Adejobi, was targeting her for only criticising the police brutality and other excesses of some personnel of the Force.
#FreeOlamide trends across platforms
The hashtag #FreeOlamide began trending on Twitter within hours of the news breaking. The trend generated more than 4000 posts as concerned Nigerians, including human rights activists have taken to social media to demand her immediate release.
Reacting to her arrest, Sowore, a former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, described as unacceptable the arrest of the nurse on direct instruction of FPPRO Adejobi for her posts against Police excesses in a Whatsapp group and on facebook.

Sowore, who took to his X account to voice his rejection of the repression on dissent voices, demanded her immediate and unconditional release, warning that such police repression would be resisted.
He wrote: “The PPRO of @PoliceNG Muyiwa Adejobi @Princemoye1 personally ordered the arrest of Olamide for her posts against Police excesses in a Whatsapp group and on @facebook; this is completely unacceptable and will be resisted. The @PoliceNG must release her immediately.”
“The kidnapping of Comrade Olamide who is a strong voice in the struggle for a better country is intentional.
“This is clearly to discourage more women from leading the struggle but it will not work,” tweeted another self acclaimed activist, Liberate Africa.
Abiodun had earlier disclosed that she hadn’t committed any crime, other than participating in the #EndSars memorial struggle held on October 20, 2024, during which she was brutalised, her money stolen in the police custody and phone destroyed.
She alleged that Adejobi had told so many people that she had case to answer, claiming that she had been bullying many Nigerians including himself on social media and therefore she should turn herself to police or she will be picked up.
