The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has declared a prohibition on the use of firecrackers, commonly referred to as knockouts, in Abuja to promote public safety during the upcoming holiday season.
The directive, issued ahead of the Christmas and New Year celebrations, is part of the police’s broader effort to minimize risks associated with the festive period and to maintain law and order in the capital.
The decision was made public through a statement released on Saturday by the police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh.
The statement from Commissioner of Police Olatunji Disu noted that the use of firecrackers frequently causes unnecessary panic, increases anxiety, and poses various safety risks, including the potential for fires.
Commissioner Disu further stated that the ban is designed to ensure the safety and security of residents, particularly during a time when many families gather to celebrate the holidays.
“The use of firecrackers creates unwarranted fear and anxiety in the community, especially among the elderly, children, and those with medical conditions,” Disu said.

In a firm stance on enforcement, Disu warned that anyone found in violation of the ban whether by using or selling firecrackers will be arrested and prosecuted according to the law. The police are determined to uphold the ban strictly to ensure the safety of all residents throughout the festive season.
The police also urged residents to support their efforts in sensitizing the public about the dangers of firecrackers. They emphasized the importance of community cooperation to help maintain public safety and peace.
The statement read, “We urge community leaders, local organizations, and residents to raise awareness about the risks associated with firecrackers and promote adherence to this directive. It is crucial for everyone to collaborate in order to guarantee a safe and peaceful holiday season.”
In addition to urging the public to adhere to the ban, the FCT Police Command also called on residents to remain vigilant throughout the season.
They encouraged citizens to report any suspicious activities or violations of the ban immediately through the police’s emergency hotlines. “We rely on the public to help us maintain safety in the community. Being vigilant and reporting promptly are essential for preventing possible threat”, Disu stated.
