Monaco’s Wilfried Singo issued an apology to Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma on Thursday, following a brutal collision during a Ligue 1 match that left the Italian shot-stopper with a severe facial injury.
The incident occurred during PSG’s 4-2 victory at the Louis II Stadium in Monaco on December 18, 2024, when Singo’s studs caught Donnarumma in the face, causing significant lacerations to the right side of his face. As a result, the PSG goalkeeper required 10 staples to close the wounds.
“I’d like to apologise to Gianluigi Donnarumma. My act was obviously not intentional, but I was able to see afterwards that he had a serious injury to his face,” Singo wrote on Instagram. He also expressed his best wishes for Donnarumma’s recovery, stating, “I wish you a good recovery.”
Donnarumma, who was visibly shaken after the collision, was unable to continue and was substituted by Matvey Safonov early in the match. PSG later confirmed that the goalkeeper would undergo medical tests and would remain inactive for several days.

Despite the severity of the injury, Singo, who was already on a yellow card, did not receive further disciplinary action. The referee deemed the challenge to be “part of the action,” as explained by PSG captain Marquinhos.
After the match, PSG released footage showing Singo and Donnarumma exchanging words on the pitch. Donnarumma reassured the Ivorian fullback, telling him, “Everything’s fine, no worries.”
In the aftermath of the incident, Monaco condemned the racist abuse directed at Singo on social media. The club issued a strong statement, saying, “Monaco condemns in the strongest possible terms the unacceptable racist comments made about Wilfried Singo after the match. Such behaviour has no place in sport, either on or off the pitch, and is totally at odds with the values that the club stands for.”
