As Christmas and New Year celebrations approach, transport fares, especially ride hailing services like Bolt has surged, leaving many Nigerians frustrated.
What was once an affordable and convenient alternative to public transport has become increasingly expensive, especially during this festive period. With high demand for rides, and the implementation of surge pricing, Bolt fares have significantly increased, impacting commuters across major cities like Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt.
The congestion in major cities like Lagos during the holiday period also contributes to longer travel times, further increasing fares.
The increased fares have forced many commuters, like Oluwaseun Fashola from Lagos, to reconsider their transportation options. “I’ve had to use public buses more often because they are still cheaper, even though they’re not as comfortable.”
The festive season, which should bring joy and family gatherings, has instead placed additional financial strain on many Nigerians. As Tunde Olugbenga from Port Harcourt shared on twitter, “The surge pricing of bolt is a double-edged sword. I get why it happens, but it still feels unfair, especially when you’re already spending on gifts, food, and travel.”

Many users, like Adebola Ayodele from Abuja, have noticed fares more than doubling: “The surge pricing is crazy. I had to pay ₦10,000 for a ride I would normally take for about ₦2,500. It feels like Bolt is exploiting the situation.”
In Ibadan, Blessing Olorunfemi shared similar concerns: “A short ride can cost as much as a meal at a nice restaurant! It’s become a luxury that I can’t afford, especially with all the extra expenses during the holiday season.”
While Bolt Share the carpool option, can help lower costs for some, it’s clear that many commuters are feeling the financial pressure as they navigate through the holiday season.
The increasing cost of Bolt rides during the festive period has created a difficult situation for many Nigerians.
As the holiday season continues, Nigerians are left hoping that ride-hailing services will find ways to balance demand and affordability, making festive travel more accessible for all.
