A barren draw between Enyimba International FC of Aba and visiting Bendel Insurance FC of Benin in the NPFL encounter is causing ripples in the Elephant city.
The home team met a determined Insurance team that was watertight at the back for the 90-minute duration of the match but Enyimba fans are not please with another draw, after win-less stretch.
Despite dominating the game and creating numerous opportunities, the home side failed to capitalize, extending their dismal run to 13 consecutive games without a win across all competitions. This marks the worst win-less streak in the club’s history and double the length of their previous record.
Enyimba’s last victory was a commanding 3-0 win over Katsina United in early October, and since then, the reigning champions have struggled to find their form. Newly appointed manager Stanley Eguma, who returned to the NPFL after 213 days since leaving Rivers United, couldn’t inspire a turnaround in his first game in charge.
Eguma said his team played well but could not convert the scoring chances that came their way.
“Today’s game was not bad. I think we got a lot of scoring chances but some players were jittery and could not make their presence count by winning the match.
“We played well but our conversion was poor. One good thing, though, is that we can play as a team. We only need a better tactical approach to finishing.
“I just resumed some eight hours ago and the thing is that, at the end of this first round, I will be able to look at the team well,” Eguma said.
He explained that there was nothing he could do, except to make use of whatever was available and ensured that the team performed better in the second round of the league.
Bendel Insurance coach, Greg Ikenogba, noted that the match went according to their game plan.
He said the players executed the game plan well and they were happy to come away with a point against Enyimba.
“Enyimba is a good team but no team is unbeatable if you can convert your chances.
“We keep working hard, the first round is gone and we go home, prepare for the second round and I believe we will do well,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the result lifted Enyimba to ninth on the league table with 24 points after 16 matches while Insurance stay 15th position with 21 points after 19 matches.
