Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has denied involvement in the impeachment of the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr. Mudashiru Obasa.

His spokesman, Gboyega Akosile Tuesday dismissed suggestions that Sanwo-Olu orchestrated Obasa’s removal due to a supposed conflict with the legislative arm.

Akosile said there was no iota of truth in such insinuations adding that the impeachment was solely a legislative matter with no political influence or interference from the state government.

He explained that the separation of powers between the Executive, Legislative, and Judiciary, as outlined in the Constitution, meant that the governor had no involvement in the decision.

“The Governor is busy with serious matters, busy with taking care of the over 20 million Lagos population.

“What happened in the Hallowed Chamber of the House of Assembly was purely the prerogative of the legislators.

“I mean, we saw on the media, just like you, that the legislators removed the Speaker. We watched like every other person. The Governor must have watched it like any other person.

“I don’t think there is anything more to it other than that. So, absolutely, there is no hand of the governor in the impeachment of the Speaker,” Akosile told newsmen.

Obasa, APC-Agege I, a sixth-term legislator and three-term Speaker, was impeached on Monday during an emergency plenary session.

Thirty-two out of the 40 lawmakers voted to remove Obasa through a voice vote, citing alleged gross misconduct.

Following the impeachment, the Assembly elected and swore in Deputy Speaker Mrs. Mojisola Meranda, APC-Apapa I, as the new Speaker, while Mr. Fatai Adebola, APC-Ibeju-Lekki I, assumed the role of Deputy Speaker.

Additionally, the House indefinitely suspended the Clerk of the Assembly, Mr. Olalekan Onafeko, during the plenary. It also dissolved all principal positions and standing committees.
