Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved the release of 52 inmates from various correctional centers across the state and commuted six death sentences to life imprisonment.
This decision was announced by the state’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Lawal Pedro, in a statement issued to the press on Tuesday.
The release order followed recommendations from the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, which considered factors such as the nature of the offense, length of incarceration, health status, age, and behavioral conduct of the inmates.
Pedro noted that 35 inmates would be released immediately, while 17 others would be granted release after serving an additional three to six months.

The governor emphasized that the released inmates are expected to demonstrate good behavior, avoid criminal activity, and reintegrate into society.
The move, Pedro explained, is part of efforts to promote justice sector reforms and alleviate overcrowding in the state’s correctional facilities.
However, he clarified that the release order will take effect once the necessary administrative procedures are completed by the correctional authorities.
