TikTok is preparing to suspend its app for users in the United States on Sunday, January 19.
This move hinges on whether the U.S. Supreme Court intervenes to block a federal ban on the platform.”
The shutdown, if it proceeds, would exceed the requirements of the federal law, which only calls for a ban on new TikTok downloads from Apple and Google app stores.
Under the current law, existing users would still be able to access the app for a period of time.
However, TikTok plans to notify users through a pop-up message when they try to open the app, redirecting them to a webpage with information about the ban.

The company will also provide users the option to download their personal data before the app shuts down.
As of now, neither TikTok nor its parent company ByteDance have commented on the report.
This potential shutdown follows legislation signed by President Joe Biden in April 2024, which mandates that ByteDance divest its U.S. assets by January 19, 2025, or face a nationwide ban.
TikTok has challenged the law, arguing it infringes upon the First Amendment rights to free speech.
In a court filing last month, TikTok disclosed that it could lose up to a third of its 170 million U.S. users if the ban lasts for a month.
The company has also requested a delay in enforcing the legislation.
