A petrol tanker explosion at Dikko Junction in Niger State has killed several people leaving many others with injuries.

The blast occurred after the tanker spilled fuel and residents gathered to scoop it.

The incident occurred on Saturday morning when a petrol tanker lost control and spilled its contents onto the tarred road.

Eyewitnesses report that, shortly after the spill, onlookers rushed to the scene to scoop the petrol.

Tragically, while many were gathering the fuel, the tanker exploded, setting the area ablaze.

Several people who were closest to the tanker perished in the fire, while others, farther away, sustained various degrees of injury.

Bologi Ibrahim, the Chief Press Secretary to Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago, confirmed the explosion and shared the governor’s response.

At the time of the incident, Governor Bago was on a tour of Suleja and Tafa Local Government Areas to assess ongoing government projects.

Ibrahim conveyed the governor’s deep shock and sorrow over the loss of life.

The governor also urged road users to exercise caution and prioritize safety.

Governor Bago described the explosion as “worrisome, heartbreaking, and unfortunate,” extending condolences to the families of the victims.

He prayed for the souls of the deceased and wished for the quick recovery of the injured.

Additionally, the governor directed relevant state authorities and security agencies to ensure security in the area and assist in restoring normalcy.

Reports indicated that the explosion, caused by a Premium Motor Spirit tanker, resulted in the deaths of many residents and left several others with severe burns.

The incident remains under investigation as authorities work to bring the situation under control.
