A Republican member of the US House of Representatives has proposed a bill that aims to allow US President Donald Trump to seek a third term in office.
The resolution was introduced on Thursday by Representative Andy Ogles.
Under the current US Constitution, no individual can be elected president more than twice.

Ogles’ proposal seeks to amend this restriction to state: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than three times … ”
The lawmaker argued that: “Trump has proven himself to be the only figure in modern history capable of reversing our nation’s decay and restoring America to greatness, and he must be given the time necessary to accomplish that goal.
“It is imperative that we provide President Trump with every resource necessary to correct the disastrous course set by the Biden administration.
“He is dedicated to restoring the republic and saving our country, and we, as legislators and as states, must do everything in our power to support him.
“I am proposing an amendment to the Constitution to revise the limitations imposed by the 22nd Amendment on presidential terms, Ogles said in a statement.”
While Trump had previously dismissed claims that he might seek a third term, he jokingly indicated after winning the 2024 election that he might consider it in discussions with Republican lawmakers.
“I suspect I won’t be running again, unless you do something,” Trump remarked.
“Unless you say, ‘he’s so good, we have to just figure it out.’”
Ogles commended Trump for his series of executive orders signed at the start of his second term, including actions on the southern border, limiting gender identities to male and female, energy production policies, and withdrawing from the World Health Organization.
The 22nd Amendment, which restricts presidents to two terms, was proposed in 1947 and adopted in 1951. It was introduced to prevent a repeat of the scenario under President Franklin Roosevelt.
Roosevelt, who served as president from 1933 to 1945, was elected four times. He passed away in 1945, less than three months after his fourth inauguration.
Following his presidency, Americans embraced George Washington’s stance that serving more than two terms could risk transforming a president into a king or dictator.
Washington, the founding father of the United States and the nation’s first president, set the precedent by stepping down after two terms.
Republicans currently hold a three-seat majority in the House of Representatives.
