The Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria, AUATON, Lagos State Council is worried that one of them has announced a 50% price slash, calling it a severe blow to drivers already struggling to make ends meet. The union has warned of a statewide protest if the reduction is not reversed.
“This drastic reduction in earnings has severe negative impacts on all AUATON members, who are already struggling to make ends meet,” Steven Iwindoye, the union’s Public Relations Officer, alleged in a statement in Lagos.
He accused ride-hailing companies, including Uber, Indrive, and Rida, of consistently slashing fares and treating drivers unfairly, pushing them to a breaking point.
“The only solution is for drivers to come together and take a stand,” he added.
Iwindoye urged all drivers, regardless of union membership, to join the planned protest, emphasizing that unity is crucial for its success.
“We cannot afford to have drivers undermining the effort by continuing to work and accepting the unfair conditions. The protest’s success relies on the unity and solidarity of all drivers,” he said.
He also criticized some drivers for hesitating to take a stand or actively working against collective interests.
“This protest is an opportunity for drivers to put aside their differences and work towards a common goal,” he stated.
While awaiting the protest date, he encouraged drivers to voice their dissatisfaction directly to Bolt. “Writing to Bolt and registering our displeasure with the 50 per cent price slash is a crucial step.
This will demonstrate our collective dissatisfaction and prepare the ground for the upcoming protest,” he said.
AUATON is calling on all app-based drivers to stand together and demand fair treatment, insisting that bold action is necessary to secure a better future for the industry.
“We urge all AUATON members and drivers to unite and demand fair treatment from ride-hailing companies. Together, we can bring about the change we deserve,” Iwindoye said.
