The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control has destroyed fake, expired, and counterfeit drugs worth ₦4.7 billion in Rivers State.
The destruction, at Rivers State Waste Management Authority Dumpsite in Aluu, is part of efforts to eliminate harmful and falsified medical products in the South-South region.
The process of collecting contraband drugs and other unwholesome health materials from six states began on Thursday, with the items transported to the dumpsite for destruction.
The South-South Director of the agency, Chukwuemeka Oligbu, who represented the Director-General, stated that the destroyed items included substandard and falsified medical products, unsafe cosmetics, counterfeit food additives, and expired regulated products seized from manufacturers, importers, and distributors.
Also destroyed were expired and damaged products voluntarily handed over by compliant companies, non-governmental organizations, the Association of Community Pharmacists, and trade unions.
Oligbu urged the public to report suspicious pharmaceutical activities and unsafe products, stressing the importance of collaboration between the agency, pharmacists, law enforcement agencies, and industry players to safeguard public health.
