Thirteen-year-old fencing sensation Peluola Akinbamiro has pledged her allegiance to Nigeria on the international stage, turning down the opportunity to compete for the United States.
The Houston-based athlete, who trains at Fort Bend Fencing Academy, made the bold decision out of love for her heritage and a desire to make an impact in the sport for her motherland.
A rising star with big dreams
Akinbamiro’s passion for fencing was ignited after watching the sport at major international tournaments. Inspired by the skill and intensity of the athletes, she decided to pick up a sword herself. Over time, fencing has taught her patience, self-awareness, and discipline—qualities she now hopes to bring to Nigeria’s national team.
“Representing Nigeria is important to me because it is my motherland, and I am proud to wear its colors in international competitions,” she said. “My goal is to reach the highest levels in fencing while also pursuing higher education.”
Nigeria welcomes a game-changer
Nigerian Fencing Federation President Adeyinka Samuel is thrilled about Akinbamiro’s decision, emphasizing that more fencers from abroad are eager to represent the country.
“Nigeria has the potential to compete with the best in the world, and having talented fencers like her will inspire our homegrown athletes to excel,” he said. “Her addition to the team will positively impact the sport’s fortunes, especially as we work toward having our athletes at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.”
Ak credits her parents for their unwavering support in helping her pursue her fencing dreams. Their dedication of time and resources has played a crucial role in her development.
Excited about what lies ahead, the young Peluola is eager to make her international debut and bring glory to Nigeria on the global stage.
