Precious Chiamaka, a student who  assaulted a lecturer in the Department of Theatre and Film Studies has been expelled by the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

In a letter dated February 13, 2025, and signed by Acting Registrar, Victor Modebelu, the university stated that the expulsion followed the recommendation of the Student Disciplinary Committee, which found the student guilty of violating the institution’s disciplinary regulations, specifically Regulation 4 SDR.

The incident gained public attention after a viral video showed Precious attacking a lecturer identified as Chukwudi Okoye.

Reports indicate that the altercation started when the lecturer interrupted a TikTok video the student was recording on campus. The situation escalated into a physical confrontation, sparking public outrage and calls for strict disciplinary measures.

Following an investigation, the disciplinary committee found Precious guilty of gross misconduct. In its official statement, the university emphasized its commitment to maintaining discipline and upholding academic integrity.

The management has directed the student to vacate the university premises immediately and return any school property in her possession. The expulsion takes effect without delay, reinforcing UNIZIK’s stance on student conduct.

A lecturer from the Department of Theatre and Film Studies, who preferred not to be named, said the decision serves as a warning that the university will not tolerate misconduct against lecturers.

While some have praised the university for taking firm action, others feel the punishment is too severe. A final-year student, Amaka, expressed concern that suspension or community service could have been considered instead of outright expulsion.

UNIZIK authorities have reiterated that disciplinary policies are in place to maintain order and deter unruly behavior. In an official statement, the university management stressed that any act of indiscipline will be addressed in line with the institution’s regulations.

With the expulsion now in effect, Precious is no longer a student of the university. It remains unclear whether she will appeal the decision or seek admission elsewhere. The incident stands as a firm reminder for students to uphold the institution’s rules and respect academic authorities.
