The Labour Party is keeping its eyes on the South East in choosing a flag bearer.
Indeed, the National Chairman, Comrade Julius Abure has against restated the party’s commitment to supporting the Southeast in its bid for the presidency in 2027.
Abure, who spoke at a rally organized by Southeast Labour Party members residing in Abuja, encouraged leaders from the region to foster unity and realign with other parts of the country to strengthen their political chances.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Obiora Ifoh, Abure assured aspirants and party members that Labour Party would conduct free, fair, and credible primaries without imposing candidates.
Reflecting on his experience during the last election, he admitted that his perception of the Igbos had changed after Peter Obi’s emergence as the party’s presidential candidate.
“Before the 2023 general election, I erroneously believed that Igbos were not united. However, after Peter Obi joined the party and I campaigned across the country, I discovered that the Igbos are the most united, most industrious, and most fearless people,” he said.
He described the decision to zone the 2023 presidential ticket to the Southeast as a bold step aimed at addressing historical grievances and giving the region a fair chance at national leadership.
“That is why I have no regrets that, despite all odds, we zoned our 2023 presidential ticket to the Southeast. We decided to wipe the tears of the Igbos, and we courageously did that during the 2023 election,” he added.
Abure urged the Southeast to draw lessons from the political strategies of the Yoruba, emphasizing the importance of building alliances across Nigeria to enhance their chances of clinching the presidency.
