The United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills Jr has stated there is no evidence that funds from United States Agency for International Development, USAID, were funnelled to finance the terror group, Boko Haram.
Speaking at the Nigerian Governors Forum meeting, Mills emphasized that stringent monitoring systems have been in place since Boko Haram was designated a Foreign Terrorist Organisation in 2013.
He challenged anyone with proof of funding misdirection to come forward, promising a thorough investigation in collaboration with Nigerian partners.
Mills highlighted the United States’ strong commitment to Nigeria and its shared goal of eradicating the violence perpetrated by Boko Haram.
He explained that policies and procedures are established to ensure that assistance from USAID and the Department of Defense is used solely for its intended purposes. Any indication of funds being diverted would prompt immediate action alongside Nigerian authorities.
The ambassador also addressed the temporary 90-day pause on certain foreign assistance measures, noting that it is intended to enhance the effectiveness of aid while ensuring alignment with US government policies.
Critical humanitarian programmes, including support for HIV patients, maternal and child nutrition, and services for internally displaced people, continue through special waivers.
During his address, Mills outlined his vision for the US-Nigeria relationship over the next four years.
He stressed the importance of boosting investment, promoting transparency and accountability, combating corruption, and empowering local governing authorities. Mills also discussed transitioning successful US-supported healthcare programmes to Nigerian management to ensure sustainable progress.
By reinforcing the United States’ unwavering support and its proactive measures against terrorism, Mills made clear that the fight against Boko Haram remains a top priority for both nations.
