A 19-year-old boy, Oluwaferanmi Olasupo has drowned in an abandoned quarry pool near Eseke Village in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, CSP Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday, saying the teenager had gone swimming with friends before the tragedy struck.
Olasupo’s grandfather, Sunday Olaseinde, reported the incident to the Divisional Police Station at about 6:39 p.m. after being informed by villagers. Following the report, police officers and a surveillance team rushed to the scene to rescue the victim.
However, poor visibility at night forced them to postpone the search until local divers could assist in retrieving the body.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the deceased was an inexperienced swimmer. Meanwhile, his friends, who were present at the scene, fled and are currently in hiding. The police have directed their parents to produce them for questioning.
Odutola warned against swimming in unsecured water bodies, particularly abandoned quarry sites, stressing the dangers they pose.
