In a bold move to enhance security across the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, the Federal Capital Territory Administration is set to establish a Central Command and Control Centre.
The facility will integrate advanced technology, including drones and surveillance cameras, to monitor and respond swiftly to security threats.
Mr. Adamu Gwary, Director of the Security Services Department, announced in Abuja that the centre had been approved by the FCT Minister, Mr. Nyesom Wike. The initiative will collate and analyze security intelligence feeds, with a dedicated unit responding to real-time threats.
He explained that the system would not only improve security but also restore public confidence in the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property. Residents, he said, would be encouraged to provide timely security information to aid swift intervention by law enforcement agencies.
“This initiative is crucial in tackling insecurity, which affects key sectors like agriculture, commerce, and education. The FCT Minister is determined to ensure residents feel safe in their communities,” Gwary stated.
To strengthen security infrastructure, Wike has also factored significant upgrades into the 2025 budget. Upon assuming office in August 2023, kidnappings were rampant in the FCT, including the city centre. To address the crisis, the minister engaged residents and stakeholders across the six area councils, identifying security as a top priority.
As part of ongoing interventions, the administration has deployed patrol vehicles fitted with advanced communication gadgets and motorcycles to security agencies and vigilante groups. This move is particularly targeted at improving security in rural and hard-to-reach areas.
Additionally, President Bola Tinubu has granted approval for the construction of 12 new police divisions—two in each area council—as well as six units of two-bedroom apartments for officers in each of these divisions.
With these measures in place, security indices in the FCT have significantly improved, reflecting the administration’s commitment to safeguarding residents and ensuring a safer environment.
