Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, condemned the recent violent attacks in the state on Tuesday, which have resulted in the deaths of 24 individuals.
The first incident, which claimed 22 lives, occurred in the agrarian community of Gbelemotin in Ovia South-West Local Government Area.
Initially, the Edo State Police Command reported seven fatalities, but sources later confirmed a higher death toll.
The violence began on Thursday night and intensified on Friday morning when sympathizers of those killed launched a counterattack, resulting in further casualties.
Crediblenews could recall that two residents of Okpekpe community in Etsako East Local Government Area, Batemue Philip Ebo and Christopher Bello, were killed by suspected herders on Monday.
A statement from the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, confirmed that the state government has declared a zero-tolerance policy for violence and pledged to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“The governor also condemned the killing of farmers Batemue Philip Ebo and Christopher Bello in Okpekpe community by suspected herdsmen on Monday,” the statement read.
“The devastating attack on seven farming communities in Ovia South-West, which left 22 dead and many injured, was reportedly carried out by militants. These militants also destroyed buildings and farm produce worth millions of naira.”
Governor Okpebholo emphasized that the state government would not tolerate any form of violence or lawlessness and would work relentlessly to ensure that those responsible for these attacks are held accountable.
He also assured that efforts would be made to prevent such incidents in the future.
In response to the attacks, Governor Okpebholo has ordered the deployment of additional security personnel to the affected areas and has pledged support for the impacted communities.
“We are committed to ensuring the safety and security of all Edo State residents,” the governor stated. “We will collaborate with security agencies, traditional leaders, and community members to ensure the situation is brought under control. We urge everyone to remain calm and continue with their normal activities as we work to restore peace and security.”
