Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum has launched a large-scale food distribution initiative, providing rice and other grains to 250,000 persons affected by flooding across the state’s 27 local government areas ahead of the Ramadan fast.
The intervention comes as many families struggle to rebuild their lives after devastating floods swept through communities, destroying homes, businesses, and livelihoods.
Speaking at the event on Wednesday, Zulum emphasized that 100,000 beneficiaries in Maiduguri and nearby areas would receive the food aid, while over 150,000 others from 25 additional local government areas would also be supported.
He highlighted the significance of the initiative as part of preparations for Ramadan, ensuring that the most vulnerable residents have access to essential food supplies.
On a major policy shift, the governor announced a 90 per cent reduction in palliatives for victims of insurgency, citing improved agricultural yields across the state. He stressed that the success of farming efforts has reaffirmed his belief in agriculture as a path to economic empowerment and self-reliance.
“The state government remains committed to supporting young people and entrepreneurs in agribusiness and other productive ventures,” Zulum stated. “Investments in agricultural inputs, infrastructure, and support programs will drive sustainable economic growth and reduce dependency on government aid.”
He also expressed deep gratitude to the federal government, other states, and corporate organizations for their continued support in Borno’s recovery efforts, acknowledging their role in easing the burden on affected communities.
