The political tension in the Lagos State House of Assembly took a new turn on Thursday, as impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa made an unexpected appearance at the Assembly complex in Ikeja. His arrival reignited speculations about a possible return to office, despite his removal weeks earlier over allegations of fraud.
Obasa, who was impeached on January 13, entered the legislative building around noon and proceeded to the Speaker’s office.
His reappearance coincided with the withdrawal of security aides attached to the current Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, while reports indicated that Obasa’s own security aides had been restored.
Meranda, who succeeded Obasa after his impeachment, became the first female Speaker of the House. However, her leadership faced uncertainty following a recent intervention by key figures of the All Progressives Congress, APC, to resolve the Assembly’s leadership crisis.
A high-level meeting involving former APC National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande, former Osun State Governor Chief Olusegun Osoba, ex-Commissioner for Justice Dr. Muiz Banire, members of the Governance Advisory Council, GAC, and some lawmakers reportedly resulted in a decision favouring Obasa’s reinstatement.
Sources familiar with the discussions indicated that lawmakers were instructed to restore Obasa, as his removal was deemed illegal. With the House yet to reconvene after Meranda’s indefinite adjournment two weeks ago, all eyes are now on the Assembly to see if Obasa will reclaim his position as the state’s number three citizen.
