The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority ,NCAA, has announced that the Ibadan airport will be closed for six months to allow for maintenance and upgrade works.

NCAA spokesperson Michael Achimugu shared the news on Friday via his X handle.

This announcement comes just eight months after President Bola Tinubu approved the upgrade of the airport to an international status.

Achimugu tweeted, “Subject to new information, Ibadan airport may be shut down for six months for maintenance/upgrade, starting from early March.”

In June, President Tinubu granted approval for the upgrade of the Ibadan Domestic Airport in Alakia to an international airport. The development was confirmed by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, in Ibadan.

In a brief video clip, Governor Makinde said, “The President has graciously approved my request for the upgrade of Ibadan Airport to an international airport.”

Makinde explained that once the upgrade is completed, including the extension of the runway and general facility improvements, Ibadan will begin to welcome international flights from around the world.

In January 2025, the governor also announced the construction of a new international terminal as part of the upgrade efforts.

This follows the groundbreaking ceremony held on September 18, 2024, for the first phase of the project.

During the ceremony, Makinde outlined that the upgrade would be completed in two major stages: the first phase, which is already in progress, includes runway improvements, lighting upgrades, and enhancements to fire services.
