The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has confiscated over 350 vehicles nationwide in one month for using unauthorized number plates. The crackdown, which began on February 3, targets vehicles with fake, unregistered, or illegally obtained plates across private, commercial, government, and diplomatic categories.

The Corps Public Education Officer, Mr. Olusegun Ogungbemide, said the initiative aims to strengthen road safety and national security, as fake number plates pose serious risks.

The first phase of the operation started in Abuja, focusing on vehicles with fake diplomatic numbers and other irregular plates before expanding nationwide. Within a month, 350 vehicles were impounded.

Ogungbemide emphasized that enforcement is ongoing to curb security threats linked to unauthorized number plates.

He urged vehicle owners to register through the National Vehicle Identification Scheme, describing the process as simple and affordable. He also warned against using unauthorized fancy number plates, stating that violators would face sanctions.

Anyone who can afford millions of naira for a car should be able to obtain a legal number plate, he said, stressing the need to prioritize safety and security.

The FRSC reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring all vehicles on Nigerian roads have legitimate number plates and urged the public to report suspicious cases to the nearest FRSC office.
