Senate President Godswill Akpabio has dismissed claims of sexual harassment made against him by Sen. Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, insisting he has never engaged in such actions. He urged Nigerians to wait for the court’s decision instead of making assumptions.

Speaking at the Senate plenary on Wednesday, Akpabio described the allegations as false, emphasizing his deep respect for women.

The controversy began on Feb. 20 when Akpoti-Uduaghan protested the alleged reallocation of her seat in the Senate chamber without her consent. The matter was later referred to the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions for review, with a two-week deadline for its report.

In a recent television interview, Akpoti-Uduaghan linked her ongoing issues with the Senate President to alleged sexual advances he made toward her.

Akpabio stated that he was raised by a single mother who instilled in him strong values and respect for women. He maintained that he had never harassed Akpoti-Uduaghan or any other woman and called for patience until the court determines the truth.

He also recalled receiving multiple awards for gender inclusion during his tenure as Akwa Ibom State governor from 2007 to 2015.

Earlier in the day, security operatives at the National Assembly dispersed a group of protesters believed to be Akpoti-Uduaghan’s supporters, preventing them from gaining access to the complex.

As the case unfolds, all eyes remain on the Senate Committee and the courts for the next course of action.
