The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has dragged to court MultiChoice Nigeria Ltd and its Chief Executive Officer, John Ugbe for violating regulatory directives and obstructing an ongoing inquiry.
The commission’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu accused MultiChoice of flouting a directive to maintain its pricing structure for DStv and GOtv pending a review of its proposed price increase.
Despite the directive issued on February 27, the company went ahead with its price adjustment on March 1, prompting the commission to file charges at the Federal High Court, Lagos Judicial Division.
The charges include willfully obstructing an inquiry by enforcing the price hike, impeding an ongoing investigation by disregarding instructions to suspend the hike, and attempting to mislead regulators by proceeding without objection.

The commision described the company’s actions as a calculated attempt to undermine regulatory authority, disrupt market fairness, and deny consumers their rights under the law.
It further condemned MultiChoice for displaying a pattern of conduct that disregards consumer protection and fair competition.
Beyond the court action, the commission is considering additional enforcement measures, including sanctions and penalties, to ensure compliance and accountability.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting consumers from exploitative practices, the commission emphasized that dominant players in any sector must uphold fair market principles and adhere to regulatory standards.
