The family of late General Sani Abacha has dismissed claims that he was responsible for the annulment of the June 12, presidential election, insisting that the decision was taken by former military Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Mohammed Abacha refuted allegations made by IBB in his book, A Journey in Service, where he linked Abacha to the controversial annulment.

The family maintained that history should not be distorted to absolve those who made critical decisions during that period.

Abacha warned Nigerians against revisionist accounts aimed at reshaping public perception for political or personal reasons.

He also emphasized that his father remained a loyal friend to Babangida, even up until his passing, and played a key role in ensuring IBB’s safety during a time of crisis.

“It is important to state unequivocally that General Sani Abacha was neither the Head of State nor the Commander-in-Chief when the June 12 election was annulled.

“The decision was made under General Ibrahim Babangida’s administration, as he held absolute executive powers at the time”, the statement read.

The Abacha family reiterated its commitment to preserving the late general’s legacy and urged the public to focus on factual historical records rather than politically motivated narratives.
