Chelsea have secured the signing of Dario Essugo from Sporting CP, continuing their aggressive pursuit of young talent. The Portuguese midfielder, who has impressed on loan at Las Palmas, will join for £18.5 million in a deal with no additional clauses.
Essugo, a Portugal Under-21 international, has primarily played as a deep-lying midfielder in Spain, where he scored his first senior goal in a defeat to Mallorca. His performances caught Chelsea’s attention, leading to a swift move to bring him to Stamford Bridge.
This marks Chelsea’s fourth wonderkid signing in recent months. The club recently finalized a deal for Geovany Quenda, another Sporting CP starlet, who was previously linked to Manchester United. Quenda will remain in Lisbon next season before joining in 2026.
The Blues have already secured South American talents Estevao Willian and Kendry Paez, both of whom will arrive in 2025 after turning 18. With Mathis Amougou also joining from Saint-Etienne in February, Chelsea’s focus on young players is evident.

Despite their long-term vision, Chelsea remains focused on immediate success. They currently sit fourth in the Premier League and are battling to secure a Champions League spot. A crucial London derby against Arsenal looms, with defeat potentially tightening the race for the top four.
Manager Enzo Maresca acknowledges the challenge ahead but remains optimistic. He pointed out that Arsenal’s stability under Mikel Arteta gives them an advantage, but Chelsea are determined to close the gap. The Blues trail the Gunners by six points ahead of the match.
Maresca emphasized that Chelsea’s focus remains on their own performance. He believes the team has improved significantly and hopes a victory over Arsenal will bring them closer to their rivals. With ten games remaining, every point is crucial in the final stretch of the season.
As Chelsea push for a strong finish, their early transfer activity signals an ambitious future. The addition of Essugo further strengthens their midfield, reinforcing their commitment to building a squad capable of long-term success.
