Nigerian media personality Toke Makinwa has addressed societal expectations surrounding marriage and motherhood, asserting that she has no regrets about her current life at 40.
Speaking on her podcast, Toke Moments, she shared her thoughts on embracing her truth despite external pressures.
Makinwa, who previously married businessman Maje Ayida in 2014, finalized their divorce in 2017 after allegations of infidelity. Since then, she has remained single, focusing on her career and personal development while staying true to herself.
During the podcast, the media mogul openly acknowledged the challenges of being unmarried and childless in a society where these milestones are often seen as measures of success. She admitted that in the past, confronting this reality made her emotional, but she has now found peace in her journey.
“Regret is so exhausting; get comfortable with your truth,” she stated. “The hardest thing I could say to myself is, ‘Geez, I am 40, single, and childless.’ I said it, and I did not die! That used to make me almost tear up. But if I am completely honest, if I had gotten married again, I would’ve been divorced again because the lessons just never stop.”

Makinwa emphasized that perspective shapes one’s experience in life. Rather than feeling incomplete, she chooses to celebrate her achievements. She highlighted her success in the media industry and her influence as one of Africa’s most recognized voices.
“I can look at it and be like, ‘Oh my God, I don’t have a child and husband.’ But I can also look at it and say, ‘I am 40, I am a boss, I have built an empire, I am one of the most resounding voices in Africa, and I am not waking up miserable,’” she affirmed.
Encouraging others to embrace their personal truths, she advised against allowing societal pressures to dictate happiness. She stressed the importance of self-acceptance, saying, “Sometimes you need to sit with your truth; you cannot shame the shameless.”
Her candid reflections have sparked widespread discussions online. While many have applauded her confidence and self-awareness, others continue to debate whether she might have a change of heart in the future. However, for now, Makinwa remains steadfast in living life on her own terms.
